SHUT YOUR MASK HOLE! YOU ARE NOT A TRUE FINE-ART PHOTOGRAPHER!

Someone called me stupid in a dream I had last night. I woke up feeling like I need to defend myself, like I need to prove my intelligence.

“Has anyone figured out what tf a fine-art photographer is? Asking for a friend…” I read a post on Facebook as I sip my morning tea. The poster is a big shot photographer from L.A.

I scroll through the comments. Most of them are disparaging. “It’s what happens when you need a way to let others know you’re pretentious and not afraid to show it. bbl I got a date with duct tape and a banana- I’ll take highest and best offer on the masterpiece.”

Trolls trolling.

I know I shouldn’t bother with a comment, but I am feeling troll nasty. “I’ve used fine-art photography in my marketing before.” I admit. “Reading these comments makes me realize that many photographers are judgy assholes. I have a fine-art middle finger up. Sardonically.”

I lower myself to engage in the gutter gab, while reveling in the brilliance of his big shot marketing strategy. L.A. photographer is a marketing savant. His business model is flawless and his online content is on point. I am not a hater. I am a fan.

MEANINGFUL LIFE QUOTE RUBBER ROOSTER MEDIA.jpg

Mr. BIG L.A. photographer is clever and ironic. He knows exactly what a fine-art photographer is.

He… is a fine-art photographer.

I know this because I paid thousands of dollars to learn from him. I was expecting straight out of camera magic tricks, but he was not the genius I expected. He is the genius of reality. We do not make our magic in camera. The click is merely the capture. We bring our photos to life as art that we create in our digital darkrooms and by all of the planning we do beforehand. We are the makers. We are the artists. #professionalphotographer #fineartportraitmaster

I consider my work to be fine-art quality, but I humbly admit there are other artists that are more deserving of the title. I am a huge fan of Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk. She is a fine-art portrait master. She plans each photo shoot with meticulous detail. She designs the costumes. She creates the concept. She hires the models to photograph. The images she creates take weeks (or months) of planning and hours in post production. She teaches photography and photoshop. I purchased one of her courses, but did not try to replicate her creative process afterward. I do not currently have the time to invest in stylized shoots or to create art on her level. Gemmy Would-Binnendijk is a phenomenal example of a true fine-art photographer.

When my clients order portraits from me I treat each image they choose as a work of fine-art. Some images take me an hour or more to finish. This particular photo is not my best work, but I am happy with the final results. I could spend another twenty minutes tweaking it further, but I am going to be late to my next photo shoot if I do. Time management is a continuous problem for me.

In a perfect world I will have time to orchestrate photo shoots on the level of Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk. I think it’s an achievable aspiration. I will just need to catch… my #whiterabbit.
